It had a lot more potential, but most of it simply consisted of long segments with no real obstacles. 31/50 ------------------------------------------ -STAR CAVE - 10204307 - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 6 Difficulty: 7 Appeal: 6.5 Functionality: 8 FUN: 6.5 COMMENTS: Not a bad level, although it was very, very repetitive. The P-Switch puzzles became rather boring and tedious after doing them a bunch of times. 34/50 ------------------------------------------ -CONTEST ENTRY - SomeGuy - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 7.5 Difficulty: 8 Appeal: 8.5 Functionality: 8 FUN: 8 COMMENTS: A rather solid level overall. The only issues I noticed were a few points of cut-off, and a slope which did not function correctly (shortly before the midway). Aside from that, it was a decent, yet basic level. 40/50 ------------------------------------------ -SHINE FOREST - Brad172 - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 9 Difficulty: 8 Appeal: 9 Functionality: 8.5 FUN: 9 COMMENTS: A wonderful level overall, covered with rich architecture and very interesting designs. Aside from a few technical issues (most notably, some of the sloped ceilings in the cave were broken), it was nice and clean. 43.5/50 ------------------------------------------ -WATER ISLAND - super pokemon world - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 4 Difficulty: 4 Appeal: 4.5 Functionality: 8.5 FUN: 4.5 COMMENTS: Pretty bland and boring, to be honest. A lot of it just involved running to the right over a couple of turn block bridges and Goombas here and there. It would have been nice if you would have at least included a side room/multiple paths/something. 40.5/50 ------------------------------------------ -SUBAQUA ADVENTURE - Tails_155 - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 8 Difficulty: 8.5 Appeal: 10 Functionality: 9 FUN: 8.5 COMMENTS: This is a beautiful level, and I can tell you spent time working on every nook and cranny. Aside from the FG/BG mix though, the level really felt kind of .. empty, in parts. I thought it was a nice touch having to travel to the "underworld". You really utilized every possible resource available to you to make this a rather outstanding vanilla level. The difficulty curve felt kind of wonky though (kept jumping between easy and hard). 46/50 ------------------------------------------ -PIRATE SHIP DIP - sky_blue_wiggler - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 7.5 Difficulty: 7 Appeal: 7 Functionality: 8 FUN: 7.5 COMMENTS: Pretty decent level overall, though some of the sprites liked to get wedged in the water with the layer 2 scrolling taking effect. The ship idea was nice, and even though I've seen it a million times before, you pulled it off well here. 37/50 ------------------------------------------ -LATE EVENING STROLL - Z. The palettes were rather nice, and I rather liked the use of multiple paths here. Cute little gimmick with the goal tape too .. I liked that. I rather liked traversing between the different elements, as well as the amount of decorations and detail you put in each. 43.5/50 ------------------------------------------ -SPLASH CASTLE - Luigi Pikachu - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 5.5 Difficulty: 6 Appeal: 6.5 Functionality: 8 FUN: 6 COMMENTS: This was a pretty average level. It felt extremely empty in parts (the room right before the auto-scrolling comes to mind). The translucent effect, mixed with the trippy colors and psycho music really reminded me of my high school days. Thanks for the dose of nostalgia. I really didn't like some of your palette choices though (the BG of the cave sort of hurt my eyes). I didn't really expect to give this level a score like this, but it was loads of fun, despite not having the best level design. Wasn't too fond of the idea of running all the way back across the level with a P-Switch, but aside from that, good stuff. 40/50 ------------------------------------------ -SUPER MARATHON MARIO - Lunar Rico - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 5.5 Difficulty: 6 Appeal: 6.5 Functionality: 7 FUN: 6.5 COMMENTS: A very average level overall. The design in general felt a bit sloppy, and some of the tiles looked randomly placed (messy, I might add). The midway also respawned after you died. The Blargg puzzle had potential, but it would have been nice if you had informed the player to count them BEFORE the pipes. I especially liked your use of vanilla gimmicks wherever possible (though the ExAnimation on all of the blocks and munchers near the end was a tad .. fast). I wasn't too fond of this level, for a couple of reasons. I understand the point of the pink palette, but it became more of a distraction than appealing. I would suggest pressing Ctrl + Del when making a new level. There was also quite a bit of cutoff (to the point where the entire ground was cut-off) and genuinely uninspired design overall. I do feel that the portion after the midway felt a tad uninspired thought (simply vine jumps until the end). I really like how you decorated the level though - the green miss and grass everywhere made it feel very jungle-like. 36.5/50 ------------------------------------------ -THE LOST LAND - TOS - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 8.5 Difficulty: 8.5 Appeal: 9 Functionality: 9 FUN: 8.5 COMMENTS: Great work here. I especially liked that you tried to implement a mini story into your level, as well as tying in the areas to it. Clever use of the airship and switch palace, and a solid design overall. 43.5/50 ------------------------------------------ -MYSTERY OF THE GREEN SWITCH PALACE - TRS- ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 8 Difficulty: 8 Appeal: 9 Functionality: 8.5 FUN: 7.5 COMMENTS: Usually I would take points off for the Map16 blue squares, but they were just used so cleverly here that they actually -helped- your score. I especially loved that castle background. The level itself felt a little lacking in parts though, especially the brick cave portion. 42/50 ------------------------------------------ -FORESTY FOREST - LunarYoshi - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 7.5 Difficulty: 8 Appeal: 9 Functionality: 8 FUN: 8 COMMENTS: Great level overall. The environment and atmosphere was very nice, as well as the emulated gradients. There were a couple of minor glitches - most notably, a respawning midway and items getting stuck in the diagonal pipe while shooting out of it. 40.5/50 ------------------------------------------ -SCALING THE ICY MOUNTAIN - ZMann - ------------------------------------------ Creativity: 7.5 Difficulty: 8 Appeal: 7.5 Functionality: 8.5 FUN: 8 COMMENTS: Pretty nice. I like how as you went higher, the background and palettes changed to match that. There were some parts of the level which were rather annoying (really disliked the red beetle room), but the main "icy" part was pretty decent. I had a blast playing it. I loved your tileset progression, as well as the skilled mixing of the ghost house/castle/"airship" sets. My only real complaint is that the difficulty in the airship portion felt a bit weak compared to the rest of the level. The low appeal points are simply because there was nothing to judge - everything was invisible. It was too flat, too linear, too spriteless, and just all-around boring. I wish the second path didn't just end up where the first does though. Design-wise, it was decent, although the left path at the start felt a bit messy. I loved the various themes you used, as well as the large attention to detail and design in each one. It was a very .. interesting .. level to play, especially with all of the variety you threw in (graphics and design-wise). I like how you broke it up into "chapters". Each area felt unique, and the effort put into the design of each one was very apparent. The difficulty curve was whacked - some parts were easy, and other parts were save state abusive. It was a very colorful and atmospheric set of sublevels; from an icy cave, to a grassland. I liked the idea of a tides autoscrolling portion, but I think it needed a bit more variation in the landscape to make it more interesting. Other than that, nothing stood out to me as "exciting and different". It was literally just blocks everywhere. The background of the cave portion was very trippy, and distracted from the level itself.
