Sprite Tool Tutorial by camoslash Here are some common things that need to be known when using Romi's/Mikeyk's Sprite tool version 1.40: First, you need to create a text file like this. You can name it anything you wish, but I would name it the same as the hack, just because it will be easier to remember once you start inserting sprites. Anyways, once you have downloaded the sprite tool from the tools section at SMWC, download some sprites. Let us say the sprite you downloaded is called chainchomp.cfg Alright now this is when you will need the text file for your hack. You will want to add the sprite into the text file like so below: 22 chainchomp.cfg Notice that I had to put a number, then a space, and then the file name. The number is called a hex. You can insert sprites from hex 20-FF. I would advise inserting a sprite that does not need the extra bit set. I will explain the extra bit once we come to it. Once you have entered the sprite into the text file, you will want to save it so that the sprite is saved to the file. Now, open the sprite tool. Let is say that your hack is called SMWhack.smc, and your text file is called SMWhack.txt When you open the sprite tool, it will ask you to put in the ROM file name. You want to type it EXACTLY as it is for the file name, like insert "SMWhack.smc". Then after that it will ask for the sprite list file name. Enter it EXACTLY like it is for the file name, example if it is SMWhack.txt, add it in as SMWhack.txt Then after that, it should show that it inserted it, and it will say "press any key to continue", which you will have to do so. Alright now that you have inserted the sprite into the hack, let us talk about how to place it. You will want to go to the EDIT tab in Lunar Magic, and click on "Insert Manual". Be sure that you have clicked on the sprite editing mode so that you will insert a sprite, not an object. Alright, now I mentioned the extra bit earlier in this tutorial, and now is the time to explain it. The extra bit is set so that a sprite may use additional/alternate effects. But it is easier to insert a sprite that does not have an extra bit. But if you do have one that uses an extra bit, than just set the extra bit to 2. You will always want to set the extrta bit to 2, because if it is set to 0, then it will use a sprite that is originaly inserted into your hack. But you can use 1 if the extra bit requires you to use 1. Anyways, after you click on insert manual, a little window will pop up. It should ask for the Command(the sprite number that is), the XY position, the Extension, Screen Number, and of course, extra bits. You can set the XY position to anything you want, it just makes it go to wherever you decided for the XY numbers. The screen position is also optional. As for the extra bit as said before, just usually set it to 2. I won't get into the extension for this tutorial. But since the sprite that was entered as: 22 chainchomp.cfg you have to put the sprite number(command) into the command spot, as you can see above, it is 22. Then after that you hit OK, then your sprite should be inserted! But you aren't done yet... You still have to insert the ExGFX. There are 4 spots where the ExGFX will go for the sprite: SP1 SP2 SP3 SP4 You do not usually occupy the SP1 or SP2 spot with any other data than what is originally there, but you will be changing SP3 and SP4. Usually it should tell you if it is either a SP1, SP2, SP3, or SP4. Now let us say that the .bin file (the EXGFX) is called something like chainchompExGFX. You will have to change it to ExGFXxx. The two little x's signify the hex. You can insert the ExGFX from anywhere between 80 and FF. Now, let us say that we re-name the ExGFX file to ExGFX80 and that it said to insert as an SP4. Now you will have to go to the LEVEL tab in Lunar Magic, and open up the one that says "Super GFX Bypass...". You should hit the ENABLE box at the top of the window as soon as it opens. Now... since it is a SP4, go under SP4, and change it to ExGFX80. It will glitch some of the other graphic of tile specific sprites, but only some of them. And yeah it is normal. Anyways, when you go to test your level, the chainchomp should look normal and not glitched! Congratulations, you have finally inserted a sprite! NOTE: Remember this is only a basic tutorial... I did not want to add anything advanced, like assembling sprites.
